Free Play Reading of New Work by Local Playwright

Join us for a FREE play reading of the new work Living With the Living by Matthew Carlin.
Saturday, August 23, 2025
1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Black Box Studio Theatre at PLT
You loved his two plays The Education of Angels and A Little Piece of Heaven staged last year during our 69th Season. Come join us as Matthew Carlin presents a second-draft reading of his new work, Living With the Living. A talk-back discussion with the playwright will follow to allow the audience to provide their direct feedback. Come be an exciting part of the creative process with one of PLT’s favorite local playwrights!
ABOUT THE PLAY: When the only living relative of the Hunt family inherits the mansion that has been in the family for over a century, there are some stipulations in the will that he must meet. For instance, he must spend the night there and it must be downstairs in the living area. An overly aggressive female real estate agent tries right away to push for the sale of the property, doing a bit of flirting as she does. She believes there is a hidden treasure in the house, and she wants it! The heir holds off, trying to honor the family’s wishes, even after learning that the original owners were murdered in the house more than a century ago. Those owners, however, are still there in the form of their ghosts (they prefer the term spirits); but something went wrong for their murderer, so the family must relive the event over and over and over again, each time in a new and hilarious manner. Add to that the heir, being the last living relative, is the only one that can actually see and communicate with their spirits, which leads to some unusual goings-on.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Matt Carlin earned his bachelor’s degree in theater from Lamar University in 1980. For the last 38 years he has run a successful financial services firm, now located in Friendswood, Texas. His true passion outside of the business, however, has been his work in the theater. He and wife, Laney, ran United Players, a local community theater, for 20 years. Over the years, he has been involved in over 150 productions with various theater groups as an actor, director and playwright. Matt has published five one act plays and four full length comedy/dramas. He will be directing another of his plays over the holiday season this year entitled Trials, Tribulations and Christmas Decorations at Pasadena Little Theatre. He considers it a blessing to see many of his plays produced all over the United States and even Canada, Australia and Nova Scotia. As always, Matt is thankful to his family for their support and lending their talents to his efforts.

Black Box Studio Theatre Undergoing a Major Transformation
Pasadena Little Theatre’s Black Box Theatre is currently under renovation to become the Black Box Studio Theatre at PLT. After not being utilized for several years, the space is getting a new look, a new layout and a new purpose! Now designed to be a truly modular space that can accommodate a number of different seating arrangements for a variety of programming, the BBST@PLT will be a welcome addition to the dynamic entertainment options offered by Your Hometown Theatre.
The Work Isn’t Done Yet!
We still need plenty of volunteers to help with the build-out/remodels on four Saturday Work Days: August 9 & 16 and September 20 & 27 @ 10:00 a.m. until mid-afternoon. So, calling all He-Men and She-Hulks, limber ladder-climbers and patient painters. All hands on deck and no help refused… PLUS, we’ll have doughnuts!
